Dilema #1 Stuck Pinch Bolts: Got em undone
« on: August 24, 2008, 07:04:30 PM »

I'm trying to remove my forks and while the top tree's 2 pinch bolts came loosened with normal effort, the bottom tree's 4 pinch bolts are stuck tight!! They're showing signs of rust and I've sprayed some WD-40 on them but not working to loosen them up. Does anything work better than WD-40?

And while my mallet has come in quite handy in the past couple of weeks  ;), the only Allen wrench I have to fit these 4 bolts is my 1/4 inch fold out variety. My individual 6 mm is too small and my 8 mm is too big. I don't have a 7 mm.  >:( Don't even know if they make one considering the 1/4 inch is nearly the same.

So while I could use the mallet on my individual Allen wrench's if I had one to fit, I'd most likely break my fold out wrench set. Is there anywhere I could buy an individual 7 mm or 1/4 inch Allen wrench? I do NOT need yet another "set"!!!

Or perhaps borrow one from one of you Houston guys at the next M&G?  ::)

The lower pinch bolts are 6mm. If your 6mm is too small, I would recommend that you use a T45, if it will fit, or a T40. Hammer it in and use an impact driver to pop the bolts out. Replace the bolts. If you don't have those items I'll bring them to the tech session if I can make it.

There are much better penetrating oils on the market than WD-40.  Check your local automotive supply house for a good quality penetrating oil (i.e. Kroil) and an individual 6mm hex socket, preferably of the 'impact' variety.  Like hipshot said, use an impact driver after allowing the oil sufficient time to work its' magic.

PB Blaster is one of the best penetrating oils around.  To help loosen up the threads take and tap it briskley with a hammer. You will probably have to do this with the allen driver in. Good Luck.

LOO, it means over lunch today I'm going to Sears NAPA and looking for some of the above mentioned penetrating oils and a 7 mm allen key  ;)

Thanks again gang!
I found the PB Blaster at O'Rielly's and that combined with tapping the bolts with a hammer and Finishing Nail Driver, along with a 1/4 inch ratchet drive, and a lot of freak'n effort I got 'er done!

Next Question???

What's the trick to getting the forks out of the trees!? Dang they're in there good. I don't trust myself to do it alone as I started rocking the bike in my efforts to yank them loose.  ??? I'll get help holding the bike from falling over.  O0

Sorry guys, but I know the bolts should have been in mm's. But a 1/4 inch hex wrench fit the best in this case. Probably the owner before me used what he had?
