MPG ????
« on: April 20, 2008, 02:24:04 PM »

I HAVE RECENTLY BOUGHT MY SECOND 02 1800C . THE FIRST ONE GOT ABOUT 33 MPG AND I RODE IT PRETTY HARD. THIS ONE GETS ABOUT 22 MPG, I GET AROUND 72 MILES AND THE RESERVE LIGHT COMES ON AND I DON'T RIDE THIS ONE AS HARD AS I DID MY LAST ONE. NOT ALOT OF MODS IT HAS SLIP ON TAIL PIPE AND A PCIII. ANY COMMENTS OR WHAT I CAN DO TO GET BETTER GAS MILEAGE????????

Check your map. A dyno pull with an a/f ratio graph will tell you what you need to know. While there could be other causes, that Power Commander is the most likely culprit.

I DON'T KNOW ENOUGH ABOUT THE POWER COMMANDER TO DO THIS I'VE THOUGHT ABOUT JUST DISCONNECTING IT AND SEE WHERE THAT TAKES ME. OR IF SOMEBODY CAN WALK ME THROUGH WHAT TO DO THAT WOULD BE GREAT. THANKS FOR THE HELP

Your Power Commander has a map loaded into it that basically controls the air/fuel ratio throughout the operating range of the engine. A dyno pull will show you where it is rich, lean, or right on, and by how much. You might try loading one of the generic maps into it off of your computer. Don't know where you are, but I imagine you're near someone who can help you through the process.

http://www.powercommander.com/powercommander_iii_usb/powercommander_general_downloads.aspx

You can download the software, instructions, and maps from that website.  It really is fairly easy to do once you go through the instructions and tutorials on the website.  When you go to the maps, just look for a stock bike with your slip on exhaust.

Good words from Hipshot and murray, +1

In the meantime, pull a plug from each cylinder and see how they look.  They can tell you a lot about how the engine is running.  Based on what you have said, they will probably be very black.   When you throttle up hard, do you see any black smoke from the exhaust?
Both of these symptoms would be indications of running too rich (along with your poor gas mileage).

If the plugs look good and no smoke from the exhaust, make sure your tire pressure is correct (low pressure will increase your drag and pull mileage down  <not to mention possible tire failure from overheating>) and make sure you don't have a caliper piston stuck and causing a pad to drag, that can really drag you down.
