Ok another question here. I went to White Sands the other day on the X. It is about 119 miles from where I live. I have always rode around for a while and never paid attention but on this trip I paid attention to the fuel. I had a full tank of gas and had to throw it into Reserve around mile 100. Is this normal? What is the distance you guys get usually when traveling? I had no passenger and no luggage.

As you know I rejetted my own carbs so I am wondering if I need to back of the air/fuel mix screw a little. Please let me know what you guys usually get to the tank. Thanks

I wouldn't go changing things on the basis of one tank.  It's always possible you accidentally short filled it or something.  Instead, just start keeping track and see how it does over time.  Top off the tank to the same level as much as possible, on the X, with the fuel cap in the center of the tank, its best done standing straight up and not on the kickstand so you can be more consistent.  Reset the trip meter each time, and calculate your mpg every time you fill up.

My girlfriend's Shadow normally gets 160-180 miles before she has to switch to reserve, a few weeks ago she only got 120 miles before she ran out, for no apparent reason.  Next tank was back to normal...

Alot also depends on the quality of the gasoline itself. I'm assuming you put regular unleaded in.

I typically run around 165-170 before I switch to reserve and then have about 40+ more miles till dry.  Of course I don't run at high speeds either...usually real close to speed limits  ::)  ::), usually that is.  I had a couple of tanks where I ran at higher speeds and also waited to switch gears at higher rpms and my mileage went to around 100 when I had to switch to reserve.  Since it take over $10 to fill up the bike now, I am slowing down and taking it alot easier...the whole purpose of the bike in the beginning was to save gas money to/from work everyday, but now I ride for fun so much I am eating up those savings  ;D ;D

I get far better mileage at a sustained 80 than at any other speed.  Sigh.

Thanks everyone. I guess I will just monitor it and see what I get and what I gotta do. Yes I use unleaded regular.

Have you had this problem consistently since the rejetting?  How does the bike run throughout the RPM range...any sputtering or hesitation?  If it's a one-time happening, I wouldn't worry about it...unless it continues hereafter.  If it's been happening since the rejet, you may have put too large of a main jet in.

I typically get to 145-170 before switching to reserve.

Oh, and I just read your statement under your avatar...that could contribute to it, also!  O0

I noticed just this week that gas with ethanol added to it dosen't go as far as gas without ethanol,
it is being used by the oil companies to dilute the gas.
This allows them to make more money off of a gallon of gas.
They want you to believe that it burns cleaner, this may be true, but fact is
you will have to buy more of it.

My 1300 averages 45 per gallon after my rejet and V&H Big Shots were added, actual improvement over stock pipes.  I hit reserve between 170 and 180 normally.
