taking the plunge... airbox and desmog - UPDATED - COMPLETED
« on: December 05, 2007, 06:19:24 AM »

So I'm thinking about doing the de-smog and installing my P4 this weekend.  Anyone tech-savvy going to be around in case I get in over my head and I can call and scream HELP?  I'm mostly paranoid because I don't have a trailer to get to the dealer if I do muck up, and it's my primary transportation.  I live in Lewisville on the Flower Mound border.

Follow Bare's instructions on his website and it will be a breeze, Morgan.  Do you already have your block off plates?  If you have any problems, you can call me.

I've got a trailer if you screw it up.  Airbox is easy, but the screws on the reed valves are a pain.  If you pull the tank, the screws are easy to remove.  Get some silicone and get a good seal when you put the plates on.

i'd be more than happy to give you a hand but i'm in austin. pulling the tank definetly makes it easier but by no means is it necessary. one word of advice when installing the plates use some red/high temp RTV and just snug up the bolts. these can break very easily if over torqued, don't ask me how i know. >:( :'(
good luck and ride safe.

RTV?  What's that stand for?  Are you just talking about high temp silicone seal like JustinVTX suggested above?  I'm probably going to dig into this tonight, get a jump on it.

RTV = High Temp Silicone...  Take your time and make sure you all the needed tools out ahead of time and you'll be fine.   O0

Just drill out the screws.

WHOO HOO!!!

So, I started about 8:30 or 9:00 and I was done by 2:00 which included taking my wife to lunch.  I didn't drill the screws, I used the "bend the crap off" method without any trouble at all.  My only hitch was that I didn't know I needed to use the stock velocity stack with the P4 but I had some stuff printed out that had been sent to me as advice and I saw that so that was good.  LOL  Desmog went easy as pie... Ok, so the walkthru says to swear a lot, and I sure was...  who has the doll hands that makes this easy?  Jeeze!  But all in all, very happy.  I wish I'd seen the parts list for the fuel tank mod and I'd gotten them in advance so I could have done that at the same time... ah well, next time I take the tank off I guess.  I can see how the tank removal gets easier once you've done it once or twice.

Now...  did I miss a memo on an EASY way to siphon the tank?   I was probably about 2 gallons down, and I was able to siphon perhaps a gallon or gallon and a half, but there was a lot of fuel still in the tank.  I only had a little come out when I removed that big brass fuel tank nut from the left side, so I must have done something right.  Thanks for all the offers of help, glad I didn't need anything!  I'm ALMOST feeling brave enough to try my valves now!  :)

Several pics in this directory, the ones that start with "s" are smaller versions of the otherwise identical file name.

Good job, Morgan.  I just drained the gas out but unplugging the gas line.  But I probably didn't get near the head rush you got, either.   ;D
