2003 1800c speedometer backlight change
« on: August 09, 2007, 10:18:52 AM »

Have a 2003 1800c, this is what the speedometer looks like;
http://www.hondadirectlineusa.com/stores/product.asp?pid=2297&str=1&ID=464580186

I would like to change out the orange backlight leds of the speedometer to a different color, blue.  I have the Surface mount led identified, but I have a few other questions...
1) how many led lights are there in there? more than one?

2) how difficult is it to take the speedometer apart?

3) what tools are needed to take it apart? any special tools?

4) why is it this speedometer hard to find and purchase?  any known place to get a new one, except from the stealers?

5) if it doesn't work, what would be a better suggestive digital speedometer to get?

thanks,

Well, I *think* the speedometer holds your mileage.  If you get a new one or change to an aftermarket, you should keep up with the old mileage.

With that said, I have green led's in mine.  There are 5 led's in the speedo.  There is a guy that went by Verrice on the VTXOA board who used to change them out.  He changed mine out, but he no longer does it.  His website is now defunct, but I have the install instructions saved in an html format that you can view.  I have all of the pictures saved as well.

I can e-mail the info in a zip, but neither I nor Verrice (I don't know him personally) take responsibility if you destroy your speedo.  Let me know if you want the zip file.

well, the instructions of how to do it was very good and I was able to get the Surface mount leds replaced, but when I did the repackaging and put the needle back onto the spindle of the speedometer, the metal spindle broke off CR**!! :o

As for the mod, I think I know why V stopped doing it!! Geez that was so difficult and almost impossible to do.  Ah well, I took the risk..now for the decision, replacement with stock or UPGRADE! ;)

I can only find Digital with Dakota, and I'm not sure what else I can put onto it.  Meaning I seem to see these new digital speedometer with odometer, speed, tach, oil temp, idiot lights, clock, oil change reminders, and underwear change reminders  ;D upon their readouts.  But what can we really wire up to the readouts?  has anyone done something more elaborate than the stock odometer/speed to these digital meters?

thanks

Contact Spike on the VTXOA, I remember seeing one on his bike in Denver  a couple of years ago. Attadude, who may or may not still be "lurking" on this board, Was one of our members with the oblong Dakota Digital on his bike. You might shout out to him. I believe all functions were functioning on the ones I mentioned though.
