Changing grips
« on: September 23, 2007, 08:38:16 PM »

I bought some Kuryakin grips for my 1800R.
I have never changed out grips, any advice?
I've heard of using everything from a blow dryer to gasoline to "loosen" the old glue holding the grips to the handlebar.
Doesn't seem like a blowdrier would work and gas seems sloppy.
Anyway, any help would be great!

I think you may have heard air compressor.  Some use them to break the glue away from the bar.  When I changed mine out I just cut the old grips off and then lightly sanded them down with fine grit paper.  Make sure you have the grips on where you want them because when that glue sets, that's it.  Good luck!  O0

I just changed out the stock grips on my 1300R with Kury Iso's Saturday morning.  The trick is WD-40 to get the stocker's off.  Great step by step instructions with pics are at this link.  Took me about an hour.

I can't remember how easy it was to get the stock ones off, but do be careful on the throttle side, the end cap doesn't snap off like the otherside, it is attached to the throttle sleeve...  If you have trouble getting the grip on the throttle side back on (i.e. trouble connecting the dual throttle cable), check the http://tech.vtxoa.com board, i think there was an explanation in there when I did mine...  It is really pretty easy with a pair of needle-nose pliers.  Other than that, get you some golf grip tape and some aqua net hairspray...  put the tape around the handle bar where the grip will go.  A little hairspray goes a long way, too much and it won't dry and your grip will slip, too little and the rubber in the grip will be smudged to the outside, just enough it'll fit like a glove and dry soon.  Also, save the cap off your left hand grip and do the key mod, cause that is kick *zz...

The trick to the cables is when you use your needle nose pliers and roll on the throttle plastic to get the slack, you can get the bottom one off, then the top, the put the new one on top first, then bottom; the exact opposite way they come off. My hardest part was getting the switch assembly back over the plastic part that rides in the cable housing; but was manageable. Have patience and the right tools to do this.

I changed mine a few weeks ago, and followed the instructions (had onlook help from a friend).  If you don't have compressed air or other method, use utility knife to GENTLY slit stock grips, then slowly run a flathead (the thinner the better) screwdriver under the grip.  Do the clutch side first since it's easier, and it will get you ready for the throttle side.  Make sure you drizzle the glue well when putting new grips on, or it won't hold well.  It's easier than it sounds if you just pay attention to the details.
