Clayton mod
« on: September 10, 2007, 08:15:01 AM »

Drilled my pipes this weekend according to Clayton.  They sound a lot better, but I'm having some backfiring on deceleration.  Is this because it's running to lean and am I going to have to adjust the carbeurator?  How difficult is that to do?

have you noticed that your bike seems to be idleing a little high? I did this same mod this weekend and sounds great . Maybe I just never noticed how fast mine idled....  I am a little worried about the carb setting I'm getting the same backfire on deceleration.

Do ya'll have 1300's or 1800's? If they are 1800's, you may try to desmog it, I know it helped me, many do the Desmog this way

I read somewhere to just put marbles in the 3 hoses that attach to the actual valve,

I did the marble trick and I have next to no popping with my clayton mod. It pops a little bit when it's cold, but then goes away pretty quickly.

Hope this helps.

Plugging the hoses is a temporary fix, and depending where you hide the marbles, you may be permitting water to accumulate in the system. Not a desireable consequence. Remove the system and install blockoff plates, which may be conveniently purchased through HDL. Most folks break off the screw in the reed valve and remove the reed from the base, and utilize the existing rubber gasket. Some folks, anticipating the possibility of having to reinstall the PAIR system in the future, leave the reed valve intact and construct a rubber gasket for the plate (we are approaching mandated emissions testing for motorcycles in Texas; the urban areas will be the first to adopt those requirements). I have used two thicknesses of bicycle inner tube on a number of bikes without any leaks that I am aware of, but if the bolts bottom out you may need to use an additional layer of rubber or shim the bolt with a washer. It's so easy a caveman can do it.

I did the Mod on my 1300 retro. It sounds great and I haven't had any backfires at all. I'm very pleased, and the money I saved bought me more chrome.

Did the Clayton on my 1300R in the winter . . . didn't touch the carbs . . . no problems at all.  If jetting or PAIR work was needed I would have sunk the bucks on Cobras (still will sometime).

Yea Snake It's a 1300. It just seems like it is idleing a bit to high. Maybe I just have to get use to it now that I can hear it. The mechanic at Iron Horse here in Huntsville told me that the Clayton mod would change my backpressure and could cause the bike to run too lean,  kinda like someone telling ya that smoking causes cancer right? but now It seems like I notice ever little change in the sound, ..  Funny but everytime I get a cold I worry that it's cancer too.. ;D

I pretty well fixed the problem over the weekend.  I found a slight exhaust leak where the rear pipe meets the head.  Tightened it down and got rid of 99% of the backfires.  Really sounds great now. Thanks for all the tips.
