VTX Longevitey
« on: September 12, 2007, 12:19:05 PM »

How long do the engines on motorcycles last if they are maintained the right way. I know that cars and trucks can last over 250,000 but what are the bikes like. I wanted to know so that when I go to buy one that I know what to look for in miles and how the price should be if the miles are high. Any suggestions? I was looking at a few this weekend and found out that I really have no Idea what to look for while buying a bike. So any that I shop pay attention to please let me know that as well.

I know of 3 VTX's that have cleared 100,000 miles with normal maintenance...one of which has 120k.  All 3 were 1800's.  I believe they were all '02 models so a couple of water pumps were replaced, but that's about it.

I wouldn't be afraid of buying an X with 50k miles on it.  These engines are practically bullet proof.

Thanks! but does the high milage depreciate the value and if so how much would you pay for one that has 50,000 miles on it.

Mileage effects the X just as much as any other bike or car.  It does depreciate.

Personally, I don't buy one just to turn around and sell it so the depreciation never concerned me.

There are X's from 02 to 08 so the value of 50k depends on the year.  Once you hit high mileage people get scared and want lower miles even though the bike runs perfect and will continue too.

I would check www.cycletrader.com and www.vtxoa.com in the for sale section.  There are some awesome deals on X's out there.

I got my '05 VTX1300C from a guy that listed on VTXOA.com

I got it this past June 4th and it only had 1300 miles on it. I paid 6k which I thought was a great deal. Some may disagree but I am very satisfied.

I also found a '05 1800 in Florida at the same time I found the one I have now. Going there and picking it up wasn't an option so I checked into shipping the bike to me. It was relatively inexpensive. I want to say less than $400. But the 1300 was closer. :)

Good luck and I if you've never had a VTX you'll be very pleased with it.

I have a question?
Has anyone ever had one of these motors go out?

I sold an 1800 recently.   03. sold it at 32k miles.

bought it in 05 out of the crate.  drove it out for 12,200
put appx 3k - 3.5 adds and mods into it.

After 2 yrs , sold it for 5990 and that was pretty much a fair market price.

hope that helps.

Honda produces a lot of motorcycles as do all Jap mfgs. IMO the value drops very quckly once one is owned

I don't like Harleys, but they appear to retain their value a great deal better.

I can't imagine one just going out...  Maybe if someone never changed the oil or forgot to put oil back in it.   ;D

The Harley name holds it's value, not necessarily the bikes.  :P   Baa Baaa   :D

I talked to a guy on a 1980 something Wing one day that claimed to have 225,000 miles on it. He said he had never had any major problems other than a water pump and stuff like that.

Mine's for sale, and it's got 43,000 miles. If I kept it, I have no doubt it could run for at least 150,000 miles. Problem is, who is gonna keep one that long. But at 43,000 miles, I have not been one bit disappointed, and it has never lost performance. I had the stock battery in it for 3 1/2 years, and the only thing that has broken on it was a $13 front brake light switch that was replaced for free under warrantee.

My friend from the coffee shop has his Harley in the shop for a top end overhaul at 40K something miles...  and before the overhaul it's probably worth 3 times a same year VTX with the same miles and another 100K before you'd even think of checking compression on it...  Go figure...

I may add to the stable, but I do not plan to see my X.  It's part of the family.
