Another reason not to wear helmets...
« on: September 15, 2007, 07:29:44 PM »

Now don’t get me wrong…I love my viXen. Heck, I sold my Goldwing to buy her. But, there’s that accursed rattle.

Yes, I’ve bought the #7 O-rings, put them on with spit, silicone, and even stacked them three high with rubber cement. The blasted rattle persisted…

So I dismantled my speedo – completely. I made really sweet (gonna show it in the CRAP forum) rubber bushings to prevent an possible contact or loose housing. I even did the silicone around the clear face of the speedo itself. The abominable rattle continued…

I took off my headlight and lightbar, did all of the mods and adjustments in this forum, the VTXOA forum, VTX Café, and Bare’s. I even used packing “peanuts” as a filler for the dead space in the headlight to prevent the wiring and lightbar module from moving around. The confounded rattle continued still…

So today, on a ride through North Texas into Oklahoma and back, I got so frustrated that I threw my hands in the air and grabbed my Symax with both hands (momentarily, mind you, cause I was runnin’ about 75mph into a headwind). And whaddayaknow…SILENCE! I couldn’t believe it – the rattle was finally gone.

It turns out that the persistent rattle was the abominable little air vent on the top of my Symax helmet. With a quick stop for something’ cold, a short chew on a stick of gum, and the proper placement of just a smidgen of the sticky stuff, “Bob’s your Uncle!” – fixed that sucker.

That rattle will drive you nuts. I did the same thing to my headlight but couldn't figure out where it was coming from at first.

Well if my X ever develops a rattle, I gues the first thing I'll check is my Symax vents ;D ;D O0

Well wearing a helmet is not a smuch fun as riding with out one.  And whether to use one or not IS a personal decision.  But I went down about 2 years ago at the Lone Star Rally in Galveston, and if I did not have the helmet on I would not be writing here.  A little road rash on the arm but the top of my helmet (abov emy right eye) was rubbed pretty good.

So I don't like them, but I wear them.... >:( >:(

Okay, THAT is the funniest thing I've heard in awhile! How frustrating and then later it's a total LOL moment! Glad you found your rattle! (sure it wasn't rocks in the head and the helmet just amplified it??? That would be MY problem! LOL!) Sorry you had to go thru so much work to FIND the darn thing though! At least you did all those mods!  ;D
