Front wheel bearings and rear tire
« on: August 09, 2007, 01:04:25 PM »

Two questions:
1. What's this I hear about the VTX front wheel bearings being trash?
2. Will a 200 tire fit on a 2005 VTX1300c and what brand is best?
Thanks,
MPM

Never have heard that the front bearings are not any good. I changed mine out at about 20,000 and they were still in good smooth shape. If you do want to change them out don't go to a stealership top get them. You can get them at this bearing company that will match the bearings to the number on them. There web site is >> www.purvisbearing.com   They have quite alot of places that you can go to get them in Texas. Have been told that the 200 will fit on the factory rim but might need to trim some on the underneath on the fender for clearance. I have a 1800c and fit just fine!!  Need anymore help just say the word.  8) 8)

Are you referring to the neck bearings by chance?  They do suck.  Mine started dancing in turns around 45mph then got progressively worse, starting at about 8k miles.

Front wheel bearings are typically fine on the 1800 and 1300.  Rear wheel bearings are a problem on the 1800's.  Mine got trashed at 20k.  I haven't heard many issues on the 1300's, but I think they use the same bearing.  Have them checked the next time you get a new rear tire.  They should spin freely.

1300 neck bearings suck.  1800 neck bearings are higher quality and will fit the 1300's.  Many have done the swap.

A 200 will NOT fit a 1300 rear wheel.  It will fit on an 1800 rear wheel.  Many have done the "foots" (I believe it's named after the first guy to do it on www.vtxoa.com) mod where you install an 1800 rear wheel/brakes on a 1300.

Just on the subject of 200 tire on a 1300.... Minicop has a 200 on his  VTX 1300s and fit just fine. His tire is a Metzler and ones that I have on my 1800c are Metzlers.  ;D ;D So a 200 will fit on some 1300 and maybe not all??  ::)

METRIC GUY... ::)  since he has a question regarding a 1300 please let the 1300 crowd answer... thank you very much...   there is a 200 rear tire that will fit the stock 1300 wheel, however is not as wide as the 1800 200 rear tire because the 1800 rear wheel is 1" wider...  so to answer your question... yes if you want to use the stock wheel the size that you need is 200/70/15  the size for the 1800 rear wheel is 200/60/16  hope this helps...  I never had a problem with the bearings on the 1300 I had.

I have yet to see a 200 on a stock 1300 rim and have always been told it can't happen, but I'd like to see one. O0

As for the rest of my post...it's correct. :P

Edit:  Looks like it can happen, but appears to be smaller since it pinches it.  That's why I never see them.  Do the foots mod.

i'm with you on the foots mod. i've seen a 200 on a 1300 and it still looks the same. it just makes it taller. it really doesn't look any different than a 170. waste of money in my opinion ;)
