Gear shifting
« on: August 20, 2007, 03:48:07 PM »

I have about 100 miles on my X (06 model, had it for 2 weeks).  Love the ride but have had 3 or 4 times where it was extremely difficult to shift gears once I came to a stop, and 2 or 3 times where I had to take off from a dead stop in 3rd gear because it would not shift at all.  Any suggestions or others who have had this same problem?  I cannot determine reasons why it does it some time but not every time.  All suggestions appreciated.

Well, only 100 miles? You're still breaking the old gal in. You may need to get a clutch adjustment (something as simple as adjusting the cable tension) to facilitate the down-shifting. Mine (2006 1300R) was originally a little stiff, but now shifts smooth as can be.

By the way, porque "sem bunda" -- de todos os nomes que poderia ter escolhido:)

welcome to the board. is it a 1300 or 1800. the reason i ask is if it's an 1800 there is no adjustment as it is a hydraulic clutch. 1300 is a cable clutch which is adjustable. back to your problem, it's a common issue with the vtx's. the clutch plates, both the steel and friction plates have square cut teeth on them, which means they need to be aligned almost perfectly to engage. if you down shift to quickly, or into neutral while coming to a stop and your still rolling they have a tendency to get out of algnment a tad. depending on how far out they get, will determine how difficult it will be to get the bike to shift into gear if at all. the solution to this is easy, downshift slow and deliberate and into first gear as you come to a stop. in other words, as you come to a complete stop you'll just be shifting into first. it takes a bit to get used to it. the other trick is once your to a complete stop, pull the clutch all the way in and back out. this will align the gears for you, then pull the clutch in again and shift gears. these bikes have alot of torque and the squar cut gears tend to hold up better than the round cut ones. hope this helps and good luck.

Just got my 1800 two weeks ago also, and noticed the same thing.  It does seem a bit better now with  500 miles on it than it did at first.

If I fail to downshift to 1st before I stop and it doesn't want to downshift while sitting still, I'll release the clutch just a bit (just enough to nudge the bike an inch or two) and it will go ahead and downshift.

Ty letting the clutch out just little.  Should help release that gear if you're trying to downshift.

Thanks for the all the quick suggestions.  When I adjust the cable, do I need to adjust it more tightly or loosely?  Didn't get to ride last night, but will try the other suggestions next time I ride.  This board is great!

Try tightening it a little bit -- it shouldn't take much.

Your plates should be pretty much set in their ways around 1500 miles.  It gets better with time.  I SERIOUSLY doubt the dealer put evergy conservative oil since I hope they wouldn't stock it, but that's a low chance possibility too.

Don't ask me how I know what it does. :P
