Direct TV - Dish Network
« on: July 03, 2007, 04:48:46 PM »

We are thinking of getting Direct TV or the Dish Network, tired of the bad signals from the antenna.  All of you who have either, what do you think.  I want a clear signal all of the time and Time Warner Cable is too expensive.

I have Direct TV.  When I have a clear signal I am happy.  When I don't, I ain't.   >:(  Storms seem to wreak the most havoc.  As far as channel selection goes I think they are about the same.  My advice is to call both of them and get the best deal.  I know that Direct TV is pretty good about setting you back up at no charge if youo ever have to move to a new house.

I've had Dishnet for 8 yrs since we moved out to the "country". I'm very happy with Dish. Great customer service. I've only lost the picture in bad storms or very heavy clouds, and only for a short time compared to hours of no service when we had cable. I recently upgraded to the 2 room DVR. I can record up to 100 hrs and set up timers to record. I can record a show and watch another at the same time. One of the best features is the ability to rewind up to 90 minutes, if you miss something, just rewind. You can also pause, then catch up by skipping commercials. If your into sports, check with each company as each has some exclusive coverage. Hope this helps.

As of right now dish has the best equiptment.  The DVR has a two twin tuner so that you can actually record two shows and watch another recorded show.   Works out good when the wife is recording soaps and there's nothing on. Also the dvr does two tv's.

I've had both, and as long as you have the dish mounted to a sturdy object, you'll rarely have problems with weather.  I think mine has gone out maybe 3 times this year.

The down side.  1.The IR remote for the main tv sucks.  2. Thier lnb's are designed to wear out in a year.

Hope this helps.

I've had both, and they both have their plusses and minuses. I now have DirecTV, simply to get the Sunday Ticket for the NFL games.  Can't get that on the Dish...  O0

I've had both and I like Dish better. Although I now have fifer optic through verizon and it is the best of all. You don't loose signal during storms. It's cheaper too!

Sounds like the reception is not as good as what I want and cable is too high for no more than I will use it.  I guess I will stick to the rabbit ears, as long as I can get the rabbit to sit still on top of the TV.

No, the reception is excellent...you can't get better reception whether you go with dish or DTV. The only time it will mess up is when the front of a storm is directly in between the sat dish and the satellite, and then only for a minute or so. It will recieve during rains no problem, until you get to one of those 3-5inch within an hour rains. Some people may have had worse luck with theirs because of alignment, but if yours is getting at least 95% signal strength during dry weather... You'll very rarely catch it messing up, even in a storm. You start with only about 60-70 % signal strength with good weather, as some people do because trees have grown to partially block the path, the dish  is too close under the eave or just not pointed right, a football bumped it, or the house/post it is mounted on has settled, and yeah, it could go out for a good bit during a rain. I installed both through the years as a side job, and have gone to help many people who "aimed" their own dish, got a signal and thought that was good, only, a signal strength of 47 will give the same perfect picture as 97, but fades waaay sooner than it ought to. There is nothing like Direct TV though, It has  waaay more offerings than dish network. After having Satellite TV... You won't even be happy with the best cable offerings out.

I agree Comcast is to high.  I switched to Dish Network about
4 years ago and love it...  except of course when the storms come.
The smallest storm can zap it all together or leave you with a
mozaic of squares that would rival any Monet.
