If I desmog my VTX, what effect will that have on passing the emissions inspection each year?

I know this question has been asked, I just can't find it on the boards again.  What the heck is "desmogging" and how is it done?  i heard it might help occasional back-firing and my bike is doing it when I let off of the throttle quickly in 5th.  Any info or links would be greatly appreciated!   O0

Bare's a good guy to donate too also. He helps people nation wide. Not only with his site but by loaning specialty tools and such out to people. He got hit hard by Katrina and helps others before he helped himself. Good dude!
