apes, miniapes and cables
« on: April 12, 2007, 12:31:17 PM »

call me kooky call me wacky, but I want some taller bars. Im not wanting to go full blown 18+" apehangers but more like 12-13" miniapes. How high can I go with the stock cables on an 1800R? And what all cables would I be lookin at replacing if I had to? I dont want to spend $100 on new bars then turn around and throw anothe $3-400 at more cables, still, I want to go taller.  Ive had my bike 2 months, and Im itching to start making it my own, I havent added anything to it (not counting the replacement parts from a wreck  :-\ ) Theres things I need, like a power commander or the like, grips and my Step Dad mentioned training wheels hardy har har  >:( . hes a funny guy aint he folks? But anyway, one thing I really want is taller bars, so any help from any one that might know, Id appreciate the info.

You'll need new hydraulic lines. You"ll probably need to lengthen your wiring to the handlebar switches, and I'm sure you'll need longer throttle cables.

Pretty sure throttle push/pull, clutch, and brakes will have to be changed out. I did run with my stock cables rerouted behind the triple trees for 8 months when I switched to fatty beach bars. It worked - but not a great idea because the brake line rubbed against the tank.
Lengthening the wires is not hard - just tedious. You should be able to run them internally too - might have to drill a couple of holes, but it will clean up the bike nicely.

Check out Xtremerevolution.com. I think they keep +4,+6, and +12 cables in stock. They were the cheapest I found for my +4's (around $50 a piece I think).

Can't help you on the brakes - my 1300 +4 brake line was pretty cheap - but I only have one brake line on the front.

Only way to really know what size cables to get is to do a mock up somehow using bailing wire or something similar to simulate the cables position and measure.

I have a 1300C so not sure if the cable lengths are about the same or not. I raised mine 2" and brought them back about 3" and that was about all the cable I could spare as they are pulled pretty tight now.
I had the drag bars so I had to add a coustom riser to them.

Hey TC. Look at the bars on a honda shadow spirit... They are high pullbacks. First thing I did with my R (02) was change the bars...excellent. Then, I wanted a little xtra and got 4 in aeromach risers. Just like you want them. I'll be at the BBT next month if you want to see how they feel/sit in your hands. A little tight on the brake/clutch hoses, but enough room that they don't bind. 5 years now and all is well.

You can get an idea here how they sit...they are about 4-5 inches narrower from grip end to end. That works well with my shorter arms too. Compare the height of these above the tank to brentos' bars in his post above mine. Quite a bit of difference.
