Desmog

Do you think any mechanics could do this?  I am ready to just put it in the shop and get the plates put on.  Know that it might cost me a bit, but I'm really tired of the backfiring and I cant get any time off to get it up to southernXer.

Print this and take it to a mechanic.

I'm not one (a mechanic) but was able to do mine. But, I still had some decel popping after the desmog. Mine didn't stop the popping until I had my bike dynoed. It was way too rich. I can still make it pop some by not closing the throttle off when slowing down. I like a little popping from time to time.

To me, decel popping and backfiring are 2 different things.

Even when I close it off, a lot of the time it will pop real loud...if it did it every great once in a while that would be one thing I guess, but it seems to be happening quite a bit to me...should I get it Dynoed before getting the desmog done?

Is your bike stock now?

You would want to do all the engine mods you plan to do before you spend the money on a dyno. Unless you want to have a before and after reading.

Had I understood more, I would have had mine run on a dyno to see what it was doing and then had a map done after the mods to make it run better and tell me what I gained.

If I was going to do it all over again, I would have left mine stock, had it dynoed to see if it needed to have the air/fuel ratio adjusted (new map). I say that now probably because I've gone the other route, spent the money and now the new has worn off. The wheels are still round and it's still all about the ride and the friends.

Once you start tinkering with it, it goes like this. Desmog, new pipes, fuel management system and then a dyno. Bottom line will be close to $1200 when your done.

A dyno run just to show what it's doing will probably run $80 to $100. A new map will run you close to $200.

Others will have a different opinion. Again, I'm no wrench.

I've got a stock bike with the clayton mod being the only thing that's been done to it.  I'm just trying to figure out the quickest and easiest way of getting the backfiring 9popping) to stop.  Don't plan on getting pipes on it as I am gonna be selling it soon, so that I can upgrade to a 1800.  So I want it to be running great ofcourse before I try to sell it.

I was assuming you had an 1800. I don't know didly about the 1300.

Found this site on the vtxoa board. http://www.vtx1300tips.com/

I know it's not your pipes but could be something to check.

Backfire from 3" DD HK
I have 3" drags w/ stage 1 kit and K&n air filter on and it still backfires, I remember reading someone had the same problem and did something with the gaskets and it stopped popping and backfiring. Anyone know a solution or at least an idea would be great.

Thank You,
Phil

In my experiences, 99% of backfires are caused by a leak around the gasket where the pipe mounts to the cylinder.

I just replaced a pair of gaskets on a 1997 Suzuki TL1000S that shot out nice blue flames when decelerating with a big pop, fixed the problem.

Enjoy, ride safely,

Roog

Thanks for that...not really sure what I want to try.  I've got the plates already for the desmog so I'm guessing I will try that first and hope it cures the problem.
