Squeking noise in forks
« on: May 14, 2006, 11:00:31 AM »

I've developed a squeaking noise in the forks. What could this be and would it be covered under warrenty?

Can you describe the squek?  Does it happen when you apply the brakes? Is it a constant squek?  More info. please...

Not really sure how to describe the noise. But, I can only hear it at slower speeds as I ride over bumps. It does it whether or not the brake is applies as well as the clutch, makes no difference. I'm pretty positive that it's coming from the forks just can't tell which one exactly.

What is your bike?  Mine was an 03 1300R.  It had a similar squeak.  Got loud at times.  Other times, not loud or non-existent.  Asked about it a couple of times I had it in for service.  Never really found out what it was, but one explanation was the ring that would keep the cowbell from rubbing directly against the fork tube would "dry" (my word, not theirs)  Got a can of spray hinge grease and cured the problem.  It would eventually come back for another treatment.

Hope this helps some.  It wasn't a big problem but annoyed the snot out of me!!

if you sit on the bike and hold in the front brake, and push down hard on the front forks, it may help issolate the noise.

sounds like the notorious fork rub.
it is the front fork rubbing against the tube. plastic on plastic i believe.
what you need to do is spray a little dry film lubricant in between those 2 parts.
if you bounce up and down on your front forks, you will be able to clean in between, and spray some dry lubricant in there too.
everyone who has had this squeak, this has resolved the problem.
i do not recommened WD-40. it will only attract dust.

Vern, I have to give your post a "8" because of the lack of pic to show where to put the dry lub, other than that, it was great for content and ref material.
thanks for posting. ;)
