« on: February 22, 2007, 08:34:24 AM »

Do we have anyone in the group that is real good a valve adjustment? I have been pricing what it cost,  :o

I have thought about doing it myslef. but I am not sure I want to do that. I am in austin and I am looking to see what others have paid or where they have gone.
Thanks

Jerry, there would not necessarily be any detectable symptoms until the harm is done. They get louder when loose, but if they're too tight you can't hear or see any indicators. Tight is worse than loose.

Hey Trent,

I will be at bike night tonight - we can talk about it then if you like. I did mine and am a couple hundred miles from needing to check them again. It is not hard to do at all.

Search for Valve adjustment on this web site. http://tech.vtxoa.com/ I printed this out so I could have it next to me when I checked mine. The second time it should be alot easier.

If they are loose the ticking is annoying and the valve is not opening long enough for best performance. If they are tight the valve will not seat properly this allows combustion gases to get past the valve seats. The valve stays hotter than normal and the passing gas will deform the valve and the valve seat. Resulting in loss of compression. By the time you as a rider notice the loss of power the damage is done. Trapper could tell you a lot more about this.
