Engine noise
« on: February 18, 2007, 08:27:50 PM »

With my windshield on have noticed more sounds comming from the engine or in that area it actually sounds like a small can with a few nuts and bolts loose inside it but the bike runs and shifts fine no problems there. The last time it was off did not notice the noise but expect that with the wind not deflected.

It sounds like its comming from the front but really hard to pin point exactly and at times seems like from the front forks

One place that mine was making noise was my heatshields on the front exhaust. I really didn't really figure out what was rattling until I was cleaning off some tar off the exhaust when it was hot.  ::)

Might check the exhaust flange, too....  Those acorn nuts have a tendency to come loose.

I just went out to check and noticed the bottom left on my radiator cover is loose compared to the other side and has alot of movement when you push and pull on it.It may need to be taken off and reinstalled will give that a try.

If it is a 1300 you may want to check the horn bracket as there are 2 peices of thin metal and 1 may break and rattle (mine did). Maybe something in the headlight bucket I put fiberglass insulation in there to stop it. Those are my 2 guesses for the day.

The VTX is somewhat a noisy engine.  My bet is that with the windshield you're hearing the reflection of the engine noise.  If you take the shield off it won't be near as loud.

Mind did the same thing.

Don't forget about the speedo rattle also.  My shield makes it all seem like it's echoing.  Find one and three more pop up!!
