Rear Tire....
« on: November 06, 2006, 09:58:37 PM »

Help,  I need to replace the rear tire on the vtx1300R.  I Have the OEM Dunlop (D404) on now,  I want to know if there is a better, Not Break the Bank Tire out there that will give me more mileage, I got 7500 miles on the rear now.---and where to buy it.  I was considering getting one size bigger but I don't know what would work,  could anyone help please!  I think the second number on the sizing for the 180 is smaller (profile maybe)-Dont know how that would work and need your help.  I have had metzler before and wanted to know how they stand against dunlop.  thanks for all your help.  What is the difference of the k555 dunlop and the d404? Is the K555 better or something?  John.

hp6652lw,

I was cleaning the salt residue from the LSR weekend and ride after being out this last week.

Did a good check on my tires as I usually try and do often, Front Dunlop E3 looked great,

Got to the rear and man I was shocked.

There was a strip about one inch wide and about twelve inches long to the cord showing.

Man, and I was just getting ready to ride to Texas World Speedway to watch the last track day of the year.

Ended up at Wild West Honda, and due to the Dunlop Plant Strike I switched to an Avon Venom R.

Out the door at $175, although they mounted it backwards the first time!

Seems to ride well, hope it lasts as long as my last, 9500 miles.

Good luck on a selection.

You can put a 200 Metzler on your 1300R and will ride great from what I hear. I have a friend that has one on his 1300R and says he will not go with anything less than a 200 on his for now on. Only thing about the 200 is that it being a bigger tire than stock it won't look like a fatty tire like it would on a 1800c because of the rim. Good luck!!  8)

John where are you located?

If in Houston there is a place in the Woodlands that has great prices. C & C Cycles.

I bought an Avon Vemon rear tire for my 1300C and it was cheaper then HDL and Rob mounted it on my wheel for only $10.00. We had to bring him the wheel but $10.00 is the cheapest anywhere except FREE............

I had a flat a couple of weeks before the LSR. Jim ordered it Thursday and Rob had the wheel in Friday afternoon. Tell him Marigold referred you.

I did the same thing on my 1300R and I will never go back to the 404's

you will be really happy with the avons,  O0 have then on my 1800c and have around 11,000 miles on them and they just have a flat spot in the middle, they are the loudest tire, but handling and long life more than makes up for that ;)

Avon, Avon, Avon, is the best I've had yet. I've got 9400 on my 1800 since I put a set on last May and be it in rain or on hot asphalt, they handle great. The looks of the tread after that mileage looks like maybe another 4000 miles on the rear and more to go on the front.  Metzler guys sware by their tires and never having owned Metz I can't say how they work. I will say that Avon works for me. Just my 2 cents worth

I have had dunnies, metz, avons and bridgstones. Rita took the bridgstones before I had 1,000 miles on them but they seemed pretty good. The avons and the metz are just about a toss up with the avon being just a little stickier. The OEM stock dunlaps are sh*t.

But, it doesn't matter which tire you run if you don't keep them FULLY inflated. Any of them will be junk in 600 miles if you run them on low pressure.
I'm the worlds worst at checking my pressure and I just took a couple thousand off the life of my avons by letting them get down to 30 psi.
I usually run mine at 40 PSI just like it says on the sidewall. I got lazy. It makes a world of difference in life of the tire and how the bike handles.
