Paint Needing Help!!!
« on: October 30, 2006, 10:34:40 PM »

I have a 2002 VTX1800R with only 5k on the miles and the paint really needs some help...I have used tinted Turtle Wax Black to try to get the luster back but it does not last.  Really need to know if there is a good buffing compound and ws that will make the paint look like it ws new, or a process that may bring it back without having to repaint.  Thanks for your input.

not sure if its any help or near as cheap as youre hoping for, but.....

you may just need a new clear coat...  you may even be able to get away with just wet sanding it and getting it cleared again depending on how bad it really is.....

I'ts real rough and does not feel smooth to the touch like it use to new.  The back fender is scrached, the gas tank is scrached in the front near where the seat is and the front fender is scrached too.  I'm thinking maybe buffing might do it but don't really know....Just would like to get it looking better for at least another year until I paint it.

Have you ever waxed it?  If you decide to, use a cheese cloth to buff it out.

Wash it real good, then wax it, and then wax it again.  If it's real bad use that turtle wax that has pigment in it.  That actually works pretty good.  It even takes swirles out of black paint. and again, buff with cheese cloth.  It makes a huge difference.

Or  you may try an oxidation remover if it feels like sand paper. Most of the time the wax will take care of that though.

I have used and still use the Turtle Wax Black...and it works fine for a few months and then back to ugly paint....I'll try it again and see what happens with the cloth.

I use 3M 'Perfect-It II Rubbing Compound' for minor scratches with a waffle pad in my drill.  It will buff out minor scratches but it's mild enough to not add swirls.  Then follow up with 2 coats of carnuba wax, I use Maguriers but any good carnuba will do IMHO.
