So I've changed my oil only 3 times since I've had the bike (#4 will happen this week), and I've had ZERO problems!  I highly recommend it.

except for your heat shield cracking..... and Lori selling your bike....

Mr VTX, I believe 8000 would be the highest that you should go with the Amsoil. I still use dino myself, but I've seen the lab reports posted on this board and the vtxoa done on the different oils. As memory serves, there was sufficient depletion of additives/viscosity in dino oil by 2500-3000 miles that to me, warranted changing every 3000 miles. The stats on the synthetic showed enough degradation that if I ran synthetic, I would be changing every 7-8000 miles. Not sure where you got the 8000 mile oil change from with 16000 on synthetic, but I'll trust the results taken from some of our riders bikes, tested in our riding conditions. Some of our own riders were sending blackstone labs their oil to be processed and tested, and Tapper got most of the results and did the work up on the miles/effective lubrication equation. It's been three to four years since I read it, but these figures are what I told myself at the time that I shouldn't go beyond. Dino-3K synthetic 7-8K. Sure, you could run synthetic 50K, but when the bearings stack up, it'll be a lesson learned. And I'm not anal about my bike, ask anyone that's seen it. Never clean...a little rust here and there, but I know the working innards need good lubrication and care.

The heat shield will be fixed soon enough, and she let me keep the bike...but I have to sleep on it now!!  It may be time for the Ultimate seats so I can get a better night's rest.  :-)  I've heard those seats are like Serta mattresses...we'll soon find out.

Just changed mine after 5,000 (that's the max limit) the other day and it still looked half Cranberries clean. Let the last little bit drain into a clear glass and looked hard for shavings of some kind and used a mag to find some kinda of steel (gear dust) and smeared it onto a piece of glass in the sun and used a magnafying glass to see if any shiney particals could be seen. Nothing. Amsoil and Amsoil filter has done a fine job for 16,000.
I know thats not a good test, but I ain't changing.

Snake,

I recall this debate before on the VTXOA board about when to change the oil.  Some people said that their manual said every 4K, and others (like mine) show every 8K.  I can't remember which one was correct, but I haven't had any issues yet.  I know 16,000 miles is excessive by any standards for changing oil, but I was willing to try it.  I do remember reading Tapper's write-up, also.  It has very good info on the subject.  I may not go that long between changes again.

Yeah, I remember that one well! I didn't know if you saw it, and just wanted to help. I know the strain I put my motor to, I need as good a lube as possible...even though (or maybe because of) I'm using dino instead of synthetic. I was just thinking someone might see that and think 16K was an "acceptable" limit. You really going to sell the orange beast?
