The Chevy Volt: Do the Math
« on: February 27, 2012, 11:44:00 PM »

MORE GOOD ADVICE FROM OBAMA  LOL -
Cost to operate a Chevy  Volt

Eric Bolling  (Fox Business Channel's Follow the Money) test drove the
Chevy Volt at the invitation of General Motors.

For four days in a  row, the fully charged battery lasted only 25 miles
before  the Volt switched to the reserve gasoline engine.

Eric calculated the  car got 30 mpg including the 25 miles it ran on the
battery.  So, the range including the 9 gallon gas tank and the 16 kwh
battery is approximately 270 miles. It will take you 4 1/2  hours to drive 270 miles at 60 mph. Then add 10 hours to  charge the battery and you have a total trip time of 14.5  hours. In a typical road trip your average speed (including  charging time) would be 20 mph.

According to  General Motors, the Volt battery hold 16 kwh of
electricity.
It takes a full 10 hours to charge a drained  battery.

The cost for the  electricity to charge the Volt is never mentioned so I
looked up what I pay for electricity.

I pay approximately  (it varies with amount used and the seasons) $1.16
per kwh.

16 kwh x $1.16 per  kwh = $18.56 to charge the battery.

$18.56 per charge  divided by 25 miles = $0.74 per mile to operate the
Volt using the battery.

Compare this to a  similar size car with a gasoline engine only that gets
32  mpg.

$3.19 per gallon  divided by 32 mpg = $0.10 per mile.

The gasoline  powered car cost about $15,000 while the Volt costs
46,000.

So Obama wants us  to pay 3 times as much for a car that costs more that
7 time  as much to run and takes 3 times as long to drive across  country.

REALLY?
My 4600 pound, 305 HP, V-8  truck will carry 4 - 6 folks plus a half ton of stuff, travels between 330 - 400 miles between fill ups and averages 24.9 cents per mile and the initial cost was half of the Volt. That's at $3.45 per gallon.  I know this think green administration is going to drive up the cost of gas to $5.00 per gallon and send those dollars to Saudi Arabia and Venezuela.

The numbers are way off for the electricity prices.  At least here in Texas.  A better high average is $.16/KwH not $1.16/KwH.

I know this is a poke at Obama and I am all good with that, but lets get the facts straight.

You are right about the electricity cost. This is a copy and paste without vetting the Kw price. My bad. Thanks for posting.

The GM Volt is a joke and political drain of tax dollars by the Democrats.  :banghead:   :banghead:   :banghead: :banghead:

Totally electric cars will never become main stream in our life time because they don't use a prime fuel source as their mode of power.  Basic physics.  Any time there is a conversion of fuel............there is a loss of efficiency.  Add to that, battery technology needs to 6-8 times more effecient than current designs will allow.  The technology advance curve for batteries is not anywhere near what it needs to be in order for electric cars to be viable in the near future.
Electric cars will not become main stream until nuclear power is the basis of our power generation and/or until the electric cars cost of return on power generation is greatly increased from what it is currently.  That won't happen until fossil fuel is near depletion due to Greeny Weenies crying for a cleaner environment.  Just wait till gas is 30 bucks a gallon and they'll be screaming for nuclear power plants then.  The ONLY reason Green technology is even in the market place today is due to government subsidy of it.  Left to stand on its own merit, it and the Ethanol lie would vanish in very little time..................just like Solyndra Green Energy Corp..  Thanks Obama for giving your buddies 535 million of our tax dollars even when you knew they were in financial trouble and then letting them skate out in the end.  Anyone else feel the PIA over that one?

Solyndra is another example of Obama picking who he decides will be the winners and losers in the business world during his administration.  He picked a huge loser in Solyndra.  Good call Mr. President!  Now keep your hands off tax payers money and let the business world correct itself like it has for the last 250 years. Insolvent companies must go through the bankruptcy process and reorganize in order to become solvent again.  GM should have gone the bankruptcy route and reorganized as well.  They would have come out in the end a more efficient business model that can stand on its own feet.  Instead Obama "saved" GM (and his union cronies that contribute millions to Obama’s election campaign) by unnecessarily pumping billion into a bloated organization that today has yet to correct their business practices. Giving money to an inefficient business is just poring it down the drain. It's just a matter of time until they are on the ropes again asking for more of your money. Governments roll in business should be to regulate it as little as possible to avoid it's influence into it.  That's a fundamental point of our economy and it will work just fine if we keep greedy hands out of it.  http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Solyndra_loan_controversy
