Need info on fairings for future purchase
« on: March 27, 2010, 11:52:27 AM »

Guys, I have searched, but I did not find any info in the forum. I will be purchasing a fairing for my 2005 VTX 1300R. I have a couple of questions.

1.   Difference between ABS Plastic and Fiber Glass?
2.   Why such a difference in price?
3.   What will be easier to paint, fiber glass or ABS plastic? I will be taking it to a shop for this.
4.   For those who have fairings, pros and cons of your fairing. I’m thinking in purchasing a Tsukayu or Xtreme Revolution or Wide Open Custom.

Thanks for your input.

No experience yet but have been looking at a reckless. Can get them on e-bay for $299 and $50 shipping.

to paint it, there is really no difference, I would get a ABS over fiver glass... ABS will absorve some light impacts where fiver glass would just crack.

I bought the XR fairing because IMO it's the best looking fairing on the VTX, and I got a killer deal on it because it was a scratch-n-dent one they had laying around.  I wanted the ABS plastic because of the price difference, and HD has been using them for years with their stuff.

I have a fiber glass one, painted well, dings do show but no cracks, I have touched up one or two rock dings on it with the left over paint I have. My fairing was custom made and not by either companies you mentioned. I like mine because it is all one enlosure and make a perfect boom box for the sounds. The up draft from the wind hitting the knees is the only issue I have. Fiberglass material is expensive.

All in all I have and still enjoy it and was well worth it....

I'll Play.  well mine is the xtreme Revolution fairing, and I've been running it for just little under a year.  same thing on the up draft that comes from below the fairing.  really need to fab up some kind of lower wind deflectors.  I like having the tunes while riding and when I put the taller windshield it helps more to block that head wind.  With the 1800, I don't really feel that it adversly affected the handling of the bike.  Real strong side winds maybe a little, but i don't ever feel threatened.  the 1800 is a tank and holds it's own down to the ground like no other.

Guys, thanks for the input. Keep it coming. Personally I'm between an Extreme Revolution and a Wide Open Custom.

Mine is fiberglass and I have no issues other than it doesn't have a very good paint job.  It was cheap so not a big deal, I will just get it painted soon then no issue.

I've had the WOC for a little over a year.  I have been very pleased with it.
Keep looking at all the options.  No one ever talks bad about the one they bought.  It all comes down to preference of style and amount of money you want to spend.
Good Luck
