Relocated the frt signals to Kewl fork bracket, Uh Oh!!
« on: August 08, 2006, 06:50:18 PM »

On my 03 vtx 1800 retro, i added the kewl light brackets designed to hold two lights each side with stand off to clear the windshield.  The fit is fine.  The problem is I removed the stock front turn signals and mounted them to the new brackets and relocated the driving lights from the engine guard to the remaining hole on the bracket.  The turn signals work fine, all ok.  But, now the fuse on the driving lights blows immediately when switched on.  Same switch and wiring as before; new location.  Question is , did I create a short to the ground by attaching the turn signals to the new bracket?  I assumed they could share the same ground (why not?) .  I don't want to attach the turn signals to the stock brackets, they don't leave a space for the Kewl brackets with lights.  Ideas?  Anyone?  Bueller?

They can share the same ground, no problem. I assume the turn signals are still wired through the regular switch wiring and the driving lights are on a fused circuit other than a stock one? The driving lights could have been wired up backwards if they were two lead lights (each) and were not grounded in thier previous position, and now that it's grounded it would blow the fuse. That would have been a guess if not for the fact that it sounds like they should have been grounded previously. Did you reroute any wires during this process that may have had a bare spot on them that could now be touching?  Did you rewire the relay or switch?

It has to be grounded somewhere. Keep looking.

I agree.  I need to dig deeper and find the short.  I appreciate the feedback from y'all.
