We are driving to Vegas for Christmas
« on: December 20, 2009, 07:03:58 PM »

I am planning of taking the Southern route to avoid mountains and snow, I-10 to Phoenix and then 93 to Kingman. Has anyone driven that route in the winter? I drove it about 12 years ago leaving Vegas when we were moving to Ft. Lauderdale in the spring. I wanted to see the Alamo, little did I know we would end Dallas 6 months later.

Anyways leaving from Houston and planning on maybe staying over in Las Cruces, of course my older son wants to drive straight through so he can see Papa sooner.

Any input that would be useful would be appreciated.

Thanks and Merry Christmas.

Trust me I am not looking forward to the drive.  If it were just me I would have flown.

I have a son that is there on Christmas leave from GoodFellow AFB. Phoenix is where he calls home now and he is getting married today. He will be heading back to San Angelo on the 2nd I think, hauling his bike in the bed of his truck. He, like your son thinks the trip is a straight thru drive....26 hours. Not for me. I have made the drive a couple of times and the only good thing I remember is there are parts of it where you can drive as fast as you want to.

If you stay over in Las Cruces, see about eating at Chopes. It is well known in the state. The resturant side is open only a couple hours for lunch and dinner. But I think the bar still serves all day. http://www.eskimo.com/~sockeye/nm/lamesachope.html

I don't know if you can avoid snow for sure, no matter which route you take to Las Vegas.  However, it sounds like you've chosen the best route to avoid it.  Just watch the weather reports and keep tuned to the radio as you go.  It may be a long drive, but look at it this way.  It's an opportunity to spend a lot of quality time with your kids!

Have a safe trip and a Merry Christmas.

The wife & I made the trip to LV, Thanksgiving 2 years ago, daugther gave birth to our 1st granddaughter. Great trip out but caught snow in El Paso on the way back. Spent the night in El Paso, next morn roads were icy, cars in ditches for about 15 miles coming back to Houston!!
Watch the weather reports, make it a safe trip
