Sound from brakes
« on: September 28, 2009, 06:24:39 PM »

So.......I just replaced my brake pads on my 1800.  not house brand or anything, but they work good and don't squeal.  However, just recently after about 300-400 miles since i installed them they now are making this tapping sound but real fast, or it speeds up as i apply more pressure.  almost sounds like back in the day when we would put baseball cards in our bicycle spokes.  Anyways, can't figure it out.  ONly makes the sound when i apply the brakes, front or rear.  I've removed the brake pads to clean and re-install, nothing evident on the rotor itself.  So, wondering is the just some sound from them breaking in, should i be overly concerned with the sound? any help or ideas sounds good to me.

Have you had your front wheel off lately? I found it to be pretty tricky to get it lined up just right when you reinstall. Mine was mis aligned once and it made a funny noise. Just a guess, really don't have a clue.
Some gear head will pop in shortly!

Dusty's right. If your shock tubes aren't aligned or snug against the spacers just right you will get a clicking sound like you described from your front pads. I've never experienced it until it happened to me today when I put Hobo's front wheel back on. If you only pulled the caliper and installed the pads, you might check the flat spacer next to the pad to see if it's set in there just right. Just my $02

I'm going to check it out again.  Just weird that after about 300 miles it started making that noise

Are you sure there is nothing stuck between the tire and fender that you can't see from the top side? Trash, stick or something? Just a long shot but easier to check than getting the wrenches back out.

In addition to what has already been mentioned, while you have the pads out again, use a sanding block to put a small chamfer on the leading edge of the pad.

I think this will be my next move, is to put that small chamfer.  Only happens when i apply pressure to the brake pads. so has to be something with that only.
