having a bad day
« on: August 19, 2009, 07:43:57 PM »

Having a real bad day.  I was backing my bike out of the garage and my foot slipped, set bike down on its side.  Got the bike picked back up, went to start it and now there is a knock coming from motor. parked it in the garage and will have to look at it in the morning.  But figured I would ask if any one has had a similar problem.

what side of the bike hit the ground? 1800 or 1300? never heard of anything like this before. maybe something is loose making a knocking noise with the motor vibrations? keep us posted and good luck.

2003 VTX 1800C  the bike went down on the right side.  Bike has a full engine guard on it.  So I will have to look into it as time permits.  As luck would have it time is not going to be on my side for the next couple of weeks though.

If laying them on the side damaged the engine in some way, then mine should have stopped running 55,000 miles ago. I did what you did at least 6 times in the first year I had it. I just couldn't accept that the bike will not travel off road very well. Then there was the dog that put me down hard at a slow speed. The bike wouldn't start at all after that one. Thats when I learned about the automatic gas shut off. If they lay on the side too long then they have to set for a few minutes (10) then they crank back up.

Was it running when you dropped it? Have you cranked it again after it sat on two wheels for a few hours? Chances are there was enough oil displaced from being on it's side that the engine was running on what would be a low oil level until the displaced oil drained back into the system. It would sound different. If the oil was cold, it would take it longer to drain back down.

I use to be paranoid about the engine noises and how it would sound different from day to day or season to season. If you want to hear some real noise, set your valves too loose and fire it up. Sounds like your shaking a half full can of rocks.

Check your oil level and ride the beast, I'm betting nothing is wrong. Be sure your bike is standing upright (not on the stand) and on level ground when you check your oil level.

We don't know yet, going to tear into it this winter. On our way back from Montana, while we were going through New Mexico, Rons bike started churning out blue smoke and burning oil the rest of the way home. Thinking it is probably a valve issue.
