Wheel bearings
« on: June 09, 2009, 06:12:51 PM »

Ok, I think my bike needs the front wheel bearings lubed.  It started making this very faint sound that I could only hear when I was coasting.  Now I can hear it even when I am going at low speeds.  It is that metal rubbing sound, kind of like what you hear on trains as they go by.

How easy/hard/time consuming is this job?  Is it something I can do myself or is it best to take it to the stealer?  If I can do it myself, what tools do I need?  The bike has 25,000+ miles on it.

I also am noticing a little more pronounced wobble on the front end when I am slowing down.  Thinking this is the preliminary signs of the dreaded front end wobble on the 1300's.  Is this a job that could/should be done at the same time as lubing the bearings?  Hipshot has told me I need to use a castle (?) wrench on the front end for this.  Does anyone have one?

No lubing the bearings!! The bearing used are sealed and you would be better off buying a new set! Bearings in the front rim are pretty easy to remove, just have to make sure you put back everything that you take out! 8)

the front end wobble on the 1300's is related to the neck bearings, typically. as stated already, the front bearings are sealed so no lubing. the sound you may be hearing is your brake pads lightly rubbing on your rotors. if you can, get the front wheel off the ground and spin the wheel manually and listen for the sound. easier to isolate it like this, may save some money rather than just guessing. good luck and ride safe.

Well, had Wayne ride my bike and listen for the sound....and wouldn't you know it...it always happens when the mechanic checks out your vehicle...no sound.  So maybe it was just the brakes...I will keep my ears open and keep paying attention to her and see what happens.

Of Course it's dirty. It's hard to clean when the tires keep moving.

I have the castle socket for the neck if that's what you're referring too.
