1800 C fork help please. Updated
« on: May 06, 2009, 05:27:33 PM »

The little piece of paper in the package said markings go up. Did that mean out or in. Out would be down when you installed the fork. I am pretty sure they meant that as if you were looking at a regular fork instead of these INVERTED forks. I think I am behind the curve learning on the 1800 so far.

Actually, I don't think it REALLY matters........................ But just to be correct I would set them up for the inverted forks (don't know if you bought the OEM seals, but if you did they SHOULD be oriented to inverted forks). I put a set on SUPRA 1's newly chromed forks and both leaked. He took them to a dealer, who said that I had installed them upside down. I really felt bad about that; aside from the fact that he had trusted me to do it correctly, I think Jonathan is a really nice guy and I had deprived him of the pleasure of riding his newly (and extensively) customized VTX. That's probably why he won't talk to me any more (just kidding, Jonathan).

I put a set on Lucky's Lover's forks when one of his seals started leaking. Wayne, Connie, and I all checked to make sure that they were oriented correctly -- I told them what I had done to Jonathan's bike. After the change, both seals were GUSHING fluid. He changed them out; we had all confirmed the orientation, and our best guess (fueled by copious quantities of Weidbuzzer Instant Intelligence Fluid) was that HDL had sent him the wrong seals. After he changed them out (with the orientation again confirmed), they continued to gush fork oil. "Fill'er up with fork oil and check the gas, please."

Because I had also attempted to install one of the seals on Dusty's forks upside down (don't tell Bill that it was actually a test to see if he was paying attention) before all of these other mishaps, I have come to the conclusion that fork seals don't like me. Actually, they hate me. However, it is a reciprocal agreement, so it's all good. Anyway, the point of all this is that when it comes to fork seals, you should be 180 degrees from whatever I say. Have I gotten you on the right track?

I guess I will take them apart buy a new set (to save time) and install them the other way this time just to see. I would just flip them but if they leaked I would have to wonder if they had been damaged. Either way this is a time consuming exercise and I am not the most patient person you would ever meet (probably break my leg kicking myself in the arse. There goes another 50 bucks with the oil.  >:( >:( >:(

BTW they were OEM parts. Replaced everything in the forks the bushings had almost no copper left on them.

Okay posted this in other places but to answer my own question the factory markings will be facing out. No further problems. Not too hard the second time around.  :bikerider:
