Finally some progress on the new tins
« on: November 12, 2008, 06:20:21 PM »

Finally the metal work is completed and the tins are ready to paint this week. The rear Sumo fender has been completed for a while as it was the design test from my drawings for fit and such. The stock front fender needed reinforced because of it's flimsiness to make the same design cuts into it. That's why the photos show the edge so thick from the weld added. But the big hold up was the new Fuel Cap and Neck on back order for 6 weeks!!??  We finally had enough and went with a different set that was twice as expensive but in stock. Go figure! But once we got the Fuel Cap and Neck to weld into the tank, things went pretty smooth from there.  O0

Oh yeah and my new seat recovering.

Very nice.. who did the tank seam fill?  How'd they do it?  I have a tank I'd love to have seam filled and painted, looks like this was an awesome job... if you could PM me details so I could make contact and talk price, that'd be awesome...

Not sure who did the previous custom Candy Orange job, but we think we matched it up again pretty well. The sample specs had it too red so Thomas made some adjustments to the base coat and it came out to a really nice Candy Orange with even more metal flake sparkle. I have been working on some graphics ideas but that will have to wait until the Spring. Right now I just want to get it all together again!
He painted up the new 1300 final drive for me first to get it installed. Doesn't show real well in the photo, but once I get the tins back I'll make sure it's a sunny day when I post those pics!

Woof, thanks for the 'preview!'  You are going to have the baddest looking X in the world.   I am really anxious to see the finished product.   The final drive looks great.  Question, however, are you going to leave the shaft cover black??.....got a chrome cover for it???    Instead of graphics, consider some subtle pinstripes of gold leaf....that would be awesome on that orange!!!!   O0

Did you do the pop-up cap yourself? I'm fixing to do the same thing to mine along with a tank stretch and seam fill. Just wondering, I've heard lots of stories about the vent in our tanks and how people have had problems after they get done...curious what your thoughts were and how you did yours...

Sorry for the delay, Nick. No I had a body shop do the metal work. Thomas, of S&T Auto Body. He rides himself and knows bikes. We picked the gas cap and weld in neck through Drag Specialties Fat Book. Part # 0703-0113

http://www.dragspecialties.com/fatbook/20/235/5918338

It's a flush mounted pop up. My 2003 tank has the breather hose coming out of the bottom. I haven't heard the stories you speak of? I'll let you know how it goes once I get it back on.

We had originally ordered a less expensive one. But after 5 weeks of it being out of stock we went with this one.

So how is the build coming along?

Hell ... you had to bring that up didn't ya!?  :banghead:

The electrical is giving me headaches! I am running the wires through the handlebars. After all the cutting and soldering I got the left side through like a charm,  But the right side with so many wires got !$#@&! up! I tried bringing the harness through in two bunches and I destroyed one of them. I have to recut and solder the mess! That's all I need to get done to mount the bars and then the tank, fill it and cross my fingers!

Just waiting for a sunny day to take pictures of the finished tins and paint job! This weekend hopefully.

Thanks for asking!
